CLASSICS MAPPING PROJECT: |
| Classics in the Subject Centre (CSC) is pleased to announce that it has secured funding to start a Mapping Project of Classical provision. The following advertisement summarises the project aims as well as the contract terms. Please pass this advertisement on to anyone you think suitable to undertake the research. Classics in the Subject Centre (CSC) invites applications from suitably qualified people to undertake a research project presently entitled 'The Classics Mapping Project' (CMP), leading to a report (which might ultimately be called The State of Classics in the UK and Ireland in the 21st Century). The purpose of this report will be threefold: 1) to inform the disciplinary community of the nature of the thing we call 'Classics' in the twenty-first century, 2) to shape the provision and development of materials to support Classics teaching by CSC and others, and 3) to provide a basis for further research into the outcomes of a Classical education with reference to employment and employers (research which in its turn might lead to a replacement for the 1990s survey and report, Classics in the Marketplace). The research will require the use of mail, telephone and other electronic resources as well as personal visits. It is envisaged that there will be several preliminary reports before the final and extensive report on the state of Classics (as broadly defined) and Classics provision in the UK and Ireland from primary schools through further, continuing and higher education to the U3A. The research will be undertaken on a contract basis over a period of 6 months, with two additional months for the writing of the final report. The total value of the contract will be £15,000 (+ £3,000 for travel expenses) payable at a rate of £1,500 per month subject to satisfactory progress in relation to agreed targets, with a further payment of £3,000 on delivery of a satisfactory final report. Applications will be particularly welcome from those with degrees in a Classical or Classics-related subject. The successful applicant will have been able to demonstrate an interest in the idea of a Classical education in the broadest and most inclusive sense and (as it were) from the cradle to the grave; he or she will also possess a high level capacity for research and analysis. Familiarity with Microsoft Access may be an advantage. The researcher must be resident within the UK or Ireland, and willing to travel both for the purposes of the contracted research and to maintain liaison with CSC in Durham. The deadline for applications - to be sent in hard copy, together with two open references/testimonials, to Christopher Rowe, Director of CSC ( c.j.rowe@dur.ac.uk <mailto:c.j.rowe@dur.ac.uk>) - is 31 January 2008, with an anticipated completion date for the contract no later than the end of 2008. Interviews will be held, in Durham, in mid-February 2008. Further information may be sought either from Christopher Rowe or from the CSC Project Officer, Eleanor OKell ( e.r.okell@dur.ac.uk <mailto:e.r.okell@dur.ac.uk>).
