JACT and Friends of Classics will shortly be launching a major appeal for Classics. Its purpose is to raise substantial sums of money to support existing, and pump-prime new, initiatives to spread the teaching of the subject across the country.

This is an extremely ambitious project, and we must get it right.

One of the problems we face, however, is that, while we - the producers – know what we value about the study of the language, culture and history of the ancient world, we have no idea what the consumers – our pupils – value about it. But, as any market researcher will tell you, unless we know what the consumers value about a product, we will never sell it to them.

The purpose of the questionnaire, therefore, is to attempt to find out what it is that your pupils like – and do not like – about Classics.

1. Please photocopy (or download - the files are in Word format at the bottom of this page) the Pupils’ Questionnaire and ask them to fill it in as best they can.
2. Since it is designed for all age-groups, and all levels, some questions may be inappropriate for some classes. In that case, please guide pupils to the questions they can most helpfully answer.
3. We are well aware that it may be impossible or very difficult to get answers to section B (for pupils who rejected Classics); but even partial information here would be invaluable
4. Please fill in the Cover Note yourself – this will give us vital information - with any other comments and suggestions you may like to make
5. Please return Cover-Note and Pupils’ responses by SEPTEMBER 24 2007, marked ‘Questionnaire’
6. If you can see more efficient ways of gathering the sort of ‘unspun’ information that we are looking for from pupils, please do so.

The results will be collated and will form a central part both of the Appeal and of the subsequent outreach to schools.
