How Friends of Classics works |
|||||||
| Friends of Classics (FoC) is a charity with three trustees (Frances Corrie, treasurer of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers' Greek Project and senior manager at KPMG, Jeannie Cohen and Dr Peter Jones) bound by obligations under the terms of our charitable status.
FoC is run by its trustees, which means that, apart from office expenses, the annual accounts and the production costs of our magazine ad familiares, all money raised goes to schools and institutions to encourage the teaching of classical languages, history and culture in our schools. Grants are usually in the £100-£500 range, frequently for buying books to start new courses: a little goes a very long way. To view grant procedures, click About Us > Grants in the menu bar: There are events every year, all London based. There are two all-day seminars a year on Saturdays in January and November, with lunch and wine (11 am-3.30pm). We always assume people's memory of the languages is slightly rusty. In recent seminars we have learnt Linear B, heard about the history of the Knossos excavations and been shown how to make sense of the Vindolanda tablets, using the latest, fabulous imaging technology which allowed the transcribers to see, for example, that c..loinmaturaadmeta was in fact Lepidinam tuam a me saluta.
For all future events, click Events in the menu bar. The colour magazine ad familiares edited by Peter Jones comes out twice a year. It is designed by Andrew Morley. Click on in the menu bar ad familiares to go and see the style and content of the magazine. The website was designed and
is maintained by Dr John A Timney. |
